Abu Qatada appeal: May stands by deadline

All Within a Day

Abu Qatada is considered a radical preacher and for that reason the UK government want him to go back to Jordan. However he is accused of planning bombattacks against American and Israeli targets, and it may be the case that the Jordan government will arrest and even torture him on arrival. This case has been going on for a long time and this news article just adds another piece of the overarching story. Abu Qatada was to be deported from the UK. He managed to file an appeal to the ECHR. This appeal arrived on Tuesday. The UK government thought that the deadline for that appeal would end on Monday while opposition thought it would be Tuesday. The law is not very clear about it and a panel of judges will have to decide. The spokeswoman from the government did point out that Abu Qatada has been using delaying tactics for years and this is just another one of his tricks.

I think this is one complicated story. What I do not understand is the reasoning behind Abu Qatada his departure. I will assume earlier news reports covered that extensively. What ever you might think of this story, you should be able to appreciate the irony of having a complicated and public case such as this one come to an astonishing halt about whether or not the person in question filed his appeal on time. In the end it seems as though the UK government was wrong and he did file his appeal on time. This one is worth following up, only risk is that such cases tend to be very long-winded.

Women flock to Aintree Ladies' Day

When thousands of people come together to share a passion, magic happens.

This is a local story about a charity event where women dress up in eccentric outfits in an attempt to get noticed and with some luck start a new trend. The racing itself is almost a distraction from the grandeur that comes with this second day of the three day festival. Because of the good wheather expectations about 50.000 people are expected to show. Not only does this 3 days of racing come with a lot of charity. The most fashionable person, judged by a jury, will win 5.000 pounds and a professional photo shoot!

I am a big fan of these kind of festivals. Though I am not a great fan of horse racing; it seems as though this festival has become about more than just the horses. Do not get me wrong, I am not big on fashion either, on the contrary. However these types of events have a certain humanistic charm about them. They are a source of positivity with athletes visiting hospitals and so many people coming together to share their, or others, creations. I can have nothing but respect for the people who organise such events on an annual bases. I only hope that they got a chance to enjoy their own festival.
